Join the Dakota County Historical Society for our new quarterly book club, "Books From Our Shelves." Each book selected relates to an aspect of Minnesota history and comes from the shelves of our gift shops.
January's book is "The Crusade For Forgotten Souls," by Susan Foote. The book explores the story of Minnesota's reform movement that broke the stigma surrounding mental illness. In 1940, Engla Schey worked at the Anoka State Hospital, one of Minnesota's seven asylums. Foote tells the story of Schey and the others involved in the reform movement, all of which resulted in the first legislative effort toward a modern mental health system.
