This presentation will explore three related questions: (1) How did emancipation unfold as both a policy and a set of experiences during the Civil War? (2) What did Juneteenth mean as it occurred in the summer of 1865? (3) What has its meaning represented in the evolution of Civil War memory? Dr. David Williard is an Associate Professor at the University of St. Thomas and teaches courses on Modern United States, the Civil War era, Civil Rights, and Violence in American history. He is currently working on a book titled "Confederate Legacy: The Problem of Soldierhood in the Post Civil War South."
